A Programme of the National Museum of Singapore Cinémathèque

Venue: Gallery Theatre, Basement
Date: MON 18 APR 2011 – SUN 30 APR 2011

On the occasion of the centenary of Akira Kurosawa’s birth, The Japan Foundation, Embassy of Japan (JCC), Singapore Film Society and Japanese Association Singapore are proud to celebrate his astonishing career with an unprecedented Retrospective featuring 21 of Kurosawa’s films, spanning 50 years of the master’s career.

Akira Kurosawa is one of the most influential and beloved filmmakers who ever lived, and for many the greatest artist the medium has known. Through films as diverse as Rashomon, Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and High and Low, Kurosawa displayed technical and artistic mastery over several genres from samurai epics to post-war noir to literary adaptations.

Born in 1910 in a Japan just emerging from its isolation, Kurosawa studied painting and literature, especially Dostoyevsky and Gorky; after the suicide of his influential older brother in 1933, he abandoned his art career and entered filmmaking, ascending from the lower rungs of Toho Studios to become one of Japan’s, and the world’s, most important directors. Maintaining a thoughtful, steadfast humanism in spite of Japan’s turbulent modern history, Kurosawa’s films are united by an embrace of ordinary humanity and modest heroism displayed through humour and redemption in the face of despair and anxiety.
